Sweet Potato & Chicken Dog Biscuit Recipe

The MayorDo your dogs like treats? Try these homemade sweet potato and chicken dog biscuits!

We hope everyone is enjoying their holiday season. We miss seeing everyone and playing at the dog park!

Short days, cold nights and snowy mornings in the forecast… time to don your oven mitts and bake some treats for your furry best friend! This is Pretzel’s original, easy to make, healthy and delicious sweet potato & chicken dog biscuit recipe! The biscuits taste great and are high in fiber, potassium, vitamin C and protein for your dog. They’re perfectly edible for humans too! Makes about two dozen cookies assuming a 3” inch cookie cutter.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups Whole Wheat Flower
  • 1 small Sweet Potato or Yam
  • 1/2 cup of LOW or NO SODIUM Chicken or Beef Broth
  • 2 Eggs
  • 2 tablespoons Canola Oil

Directions

Pour 2 1/2 cups of Whole Wheat Flour into a mixing bowl. Wash the sweet potato then prick it up and down two sides with a fork. Wrap the potato in a paper towel and cook the potato thoroughly in a microwave. Remove the potato skin, slice the potato up and put it in the measuring cup with 1/2 a cup of low sodium beef or chicken broth. Add the two eggs and two tablespoons of canola oil and mix thoroughly with a fork. Mash the potato up so the mixture looks like a puree then pour it over the flour in the mixing bowl. Work the mixture with a fork, then your hands, and make two separate balls of dough.

Put the ball of dough on a lightly floured surface. Use a rolling pin to flatten it out to less than a 1/4″ thickness. (3/16″ or 5/32″ is best, but who’s measuring?) Use a cookie cutter to cut the desired shape (I use a 3″ long dog bone shaped cookie cutter). Put the cookies on a slightly greased pan and bake at 350º Fahrenheit for 33 minutes (oven times may vary). Remove from oven and allow to cool completely on a cooling rack before putting into the cookie jar; don’t forget to give one to your dog!

Notes

It’s essential that you use LOW or NO Sodium beef or chicken broth. Sodium is really bad for dogs. However, a typical “low sodium” broth might come in a 14.5 ounce can and contain a total of 800mg of sodium. You’d only use 4 ounces in this recipe to make 24 cookies which comes out to about 9mg of sodium per cookie, which is a safe amount for dogs.

Find the smallest sweet potato you can! Too much sweet potato can render the cookies “chewy” instead of “crunchy.” They won’t dry out well and will spoil quickly.

It’s important to make the cookies thin and cook them long enough so they come out crunchy. There are no preservatives in this recipe. Drier, crunchier cookies will stay longer than chewy ones. Be sure to let the cookies cool completely before putting them into a cookie jar as well. Warm cookies will create condensation and wetness in the jar which can lead to spoilage.
