TWO HARBORS – The City of Two Harbors has officially gone to the dogs — and that’s not a bad thing. After months of hard work by dog owners in the area, Two Harbors now has its first ever off-leash dog park — at least temporarily. But more plans are in the works, as FOX 21’s Dan Hanger reports.
“Ya know, I love it up here. This is a great town. The only problem with it was it didn’t have a dog park,” explained Ian Fritza, a resident of Two Harbors who got the ball rolling for this project.
“We needed a clean, safe environment for dogs to socialize off leash,” Fritza said.
The 10,000-square-foot doggy pad is on the back side of the Lake County Arena and is actually inside the skating rink.
The group Friends of the Two Harbors Dog Park raised $400 to build a double-door entry system and a fenced-off section for the small pups.
And as for the big dogs in town, this freedom off the lease is something that’s like Disneyland, especially for their owners.
“I mean, we put children’s parks in every neighborhood, so why can’t we accommodate the people that also have dogs,” said Heather Jellum, a dog owner.
“And then she gets tired and then she just wants to lay … but a tired dog is a good dog,” joked Brian Borglum about his dog.
Meanwhile, the excitement is just beginning because Fritz wants to lease nearby land from Lakeview Memorial Hospital to set up a bigger, permanent, year-round dog park with some extra fun.
“We could also build a sandbox or something so the dogs can dig to do that sort of thing,” Fritza said.
But until that time comes, and with the city council’s approval, this new-found space is lookin’ dog gone fine for now.
“It’s great to have a place where they can run off the leash and just run full speed and you don’t have to worry about cars,” Borglum said.
